Money and Passion

How do you follow your passion and make money at the same time?

Hi my name is Tim van der Vliet. I have been a trader in financial markets for most of my career life. 4 years ago I switched careers. Now I am an author of what I call “Zen form Amsterdam”. Zen from Amsterdam is Zen without rules. If you want to follow your heart there are no rules to follow but your own. My first book is published by Hay House and is translated into Dutch and French. I  give lectures and workshops (mostly UK and the Netherlands), I coach and 23rd of March I will launch an online course: Find your Dream Job.

I have found a way to make my dreams come true, and more specific, to follow my heart and make enough money to have a comfortable life. It sounds a bit cocky but I have always loved the jobs that I've had, also when I was working in the financial markets.

3 steps to following your dreams and making money

I've found that doing what you love to do and make money at the same time is a combination of three things, or a 3 step process. This is how I've found or created my dream jobs.

1) Get your dreams straight

I spent time on knowing what I really want from life, and even what life wants from me. I spent time on getting my dreams straight. You can get your dreams straight by watching your feeling in daily life. Whenever you feel good, write down why. And I believe that facing your fears also opens you up to what your dreams are. And once you face your fears you'll see that most of the time you have been afraid for no reason.

2) Did you learn your lesson already?
Whenever something negative happens I try to find the lessons that I can learn from it. We all hit rock bottom once in a while. I believe we are always at the right place at the right time. If you perceive something as negative, there is a lesson to learn. If you learn that lesson you can break free from it and move on.

3) Put your feet on the ground if you want to jump to your dream job

Work hard! I may be over rational here but if you don't put your feet down on Mother Earth and start working on your dreams...nothing will happen.

Not in your dream job yet?

If you are not in your dream job yet it may be because 1) you don't know what you want. You don't have your dreams straight yet. 2) It may be that there is a lesson to learn in your current situation. Or 3) maybe you are not putting your feet on the ground and work on your dreams.

What I really mean with this 3 step process is that you should dream biggest dreams and at the same time make baby steps, which means putting your feet on the ground and work on that what makes you happy. Simple? It becomes even simpler.

Two hours a day is all it takes

It takes only two hours a day to unfold the magic. If you work on your dreams for two hours every day before you know it you are walking a different path. Everybody can make time to work two hours per day, even if you have a job, kids, mortgage and friends. It may mean no television, less newspapers, working in the train and have lunch alone while you are at work. It may be that at a certain moment that you are working much harder than two hours per day. But to start a change and get things moving it takes two hours a day.

It takes only two hours a day to start making your dreams come true! And look at me. My wife decided to work 6 days a week! So I am full time daddy of 4 and I am still having my dream job. On busy kids days I want to work at least two hours. But you know what? Often I work 6-10 hours just because I love what I am doing. It is not work, just a hobby that pays.

Your joker card

If you are out of inspiration you can fill in the two hours per day with working on your body and mind. Sports, yoga, walk in the park, and practice some form of silence. Stepping away from your dreams and your work is essential to get good creative ideas. And you become better looking as a side effect!!

You are born to do what you love to do, please remember that. And it is your birth right to make money with your passion.

Enjoy yourself!

Wish you Zen from Amsterdam.
