The Influence of Social Media on your Well-Being

Sometimes things just happen. Recently at 3 a.m. my youngest cat Lapje (6 years) had to throw up. If she is acting like this I  know there is more to it. Besides that I know I have to watch her and see to it that she is not disappearing into nothingness.  After 2 hours of cleaning things and looking after her she jumped onto the bed which means in cat language: I am  allright again.

During the morning I talked to some friends about the incident and furthermore about my experience with denying all social media for a while. What a relieve that already is for my well-being. My head is more empty and I can focuss on the things that matter to me. Of course I have read articles about it and heard people talk about it. What matters is your own experience.

About 10 years ago I gave my television away and ended my subscription on the newspaper. But………about some years ago somebody told me that I was able to see tv programs on the internet. Oh boy since that time I watch different ,for me ,interesting programs and I was back to square one.

The reason that I wanted to empty my mind again is twofold. First of all I wanted to have my focus on my own priorities. On my passion in this moment. For that I need emptyness in body, mind and soul.

The second reason is the influence of politicians/politics on tv programs. The way I look at it the programs are not about awareness, but about money and power.

All of a sudden I was so conscious of the manipulation. I decided : not anymore for me!!

My cat taught me a lesson last night and this is not for the first time! As you probably know dear readers cats are very sensitive beings. They can feel and read your energy and react accordingly.

This is what happened. I was sitting on the coach talking to friends on the phone and while I was putting my phone away I saw in a blink of an eye the F of facebook passing by. What happened next was miraculous and hilarious at the same time. A feeling of “fatal attraction” rushed through my body and mind and before I knew it I had touched the screen and I was reading my facebook page.  Lo and behold the first two messages were the most horrified stories I had heard of since long.

The first one was a post from a friend about the murder of a Dutch couple in their house in Costa Rica. The man is a good friend of my facebook and realtime friend. She had phoned me about it already, but still here it is printed in front of me. I got the chills.

The second message was from a young (35) man, a former client.  He was diagnosed with a type of lungcancer which is seen by young people who are not smoking and live a healthy life!!!! It has to do with a gen mutation called ROS1.

After reading the second post my body, heart and soul were all over the place. I put away my phone and realized what an impact news can have on you. At night I was still digesting the news and could not sleep well. I was restless and dreaming away. Lapje who slept on a chair next to my bed of course felt the energy. She literally threw up my energetic shit.

One of my friends I phoned the next morning is an energetic healer and confirmed my thoughts.

I think it hit me so intense because of the detox posture I was in with regard  to tv and internetnews and I was off guard. It hit me right in the face. I felt sick all over.

Illnesses start in the energetic field and eventually can hit your physical body. I realize again how we are affected by all the news in different ways, waves of energy by all the electrical equipment, GMT masts, the way we communicate with each other etc etc.

Not long after I had written this story I was attracted by an article in a newsletter. It read: Social Media and the Mind.

How do hours of Facebook, among other constant streams, affect our cognition and mental health? Scientist are beginning to find out………………………….

This is what draw my attention with regard to my experience with Facebook at the time. Some studies have found that the way a user interacts with Facebook may be crucial.

I quote:

The Right Dose

So is it a good idea to quit social media completely? One study last year from the Happiness Research Institute found that people who quit Facebook reported being both happier and more in the present moment. After a week of Facebook abstinence, they even reported higher life satisfaction. They also enjoyed reductions in worry, sadness, loneliness, and depression.

If you're not ready to quit completely, try taking a little breather from it and see what happens. If it works, keep going. If it doesn't, maybe a little here and there won't hurt. Just don't let your whole existence hang on what your Facebook friends are doing, and how many "likes" your posts accumulate. There's definitely more to life than that.
